Why self-compassion?

If you are a perfectionist like me, you may also, at first, see the practice of self-compassion as an excuse for lowering your standards, settling, or achieving less. I am here to tell you it is anything but, and help you realize the impact it will have in your life. According to Serena Chen’s article in the Harvard Business Review, self-compassion is linked to enhanced performance because people who practice it tend to be both: more realistic about their shortcomings, and more willing to take action into changing or improving. I personally appreciate the following quote from her article:

“We found that those who were encouraged to treat themselves with compassion reported being more motivated to make amends and to never repeat the transgression than participants who were encouraged to respond to the transgression in a self-esteem-boosting manner and those in the control group. In other research, we found that self-compassion increased the resolve of people who said they had been responsible for a romantic breakup to be better partners in future relationships, compared with participants in the other two conditions.”
